Holding the standard: how Hillcrest keeps its examination record

Hillcrest has been noted for strong national examination performance — at times leading the sub-county in KCPE results. Behind that headline sits something far less glamorous: diagnostic testing in week one, small remedial groups by week three, and honest conversations with parents every single term.

This term we are extending the same approach to the lower grades, so that gaps are found early rather than in Grade 6.

Hillcrest athletes take to the track

Our junior athletes competed in the inter-school term games, coming home with medals and — more importantly — with a team that supported each other from the first heat to the last.

Reading week: one book, one child

Every class took part in our reading drive. Seniors read to the juniors, the library stayed open late, and each child chose a book to take home at the end of the week.

Interviews open for all grade levels

Admissions run on a rolling basis, with interviews structured for specific grade levels. Places are tightest in Kindergarten and PP1 — early enquiry is strongly advised.

Notes from the staff room

On character

Results open doors, but character decides what a child does once inside. We treat moral education as a timetabled subject, not an afterthought.

On assessment

A test should tell a teacher what to teach next. If an assessment does not change what happens in the following week, it was not worth setting.

On parents

The strongest predictor of a child's progress is an involved home. Our reporting meetings are deliberately early, specific and honest.
